I bow to you, O
Goddess Durga, the bestower of all happiness! I bow to you, O Goddess Amba, Who
ends all miseries.
The radiance of
your light is limitless and pervading and all three realms (Earth, Heaven, and
the Netherworld) are enlightened by you.
Your Visage is
like the moon, and your face is very huge. Your eyes are red with frightening
brows.
O Mother! Your
darshan is enchanting, the very sight of which ensures the welfare of the devout.
Tum Sansaar Shakti
Lai Kinaa | Paalan Hetu Anna Dhan Dinaa || 5 ||
Annapurnaa Hui Jag
Palaa | Tum Hi Aadi Sundari Baalaa || 6 ||
Pralaya Kaal Sab
Naashan Haari | Tum Gauri Shiv-Shankar Pyaari || 7 ||
Shiv Yogi Tumharein
Gun Gaaven | Brahma Vishnu Tumhen Nit Dhyaaven || 8 ||
All the powers of the world repose in you and it is you who provide food and money for the world’s survival.
Like the feeding
mother Annapurna, you nurture the whole universe and you are the one who
appears like the timeless Bala Sundari (young girl of extreme beauty).
At the time of
Dissolution, it is you, O Mother, who destroys everything. You are the beloved
consort of Lord Shiva, Gauri (Parvathi).
Lord Shiva and
all yogis always chant your praise. Brahma, Vishnu, and all other Gods ever
meditate on you.
Roop Saraswati Ko
Tum Dhaara | De Subuddhi Rishi Munin Ubaara || 9 ||
Dharyo Roop Narsimha
Ko Ambaa | Pragat Bhayin Phaad Kar Khamba || 10 ||
Rakshaa Kari
Prahlaad Bachaayo | Hiranyaaksh Ko Swarga Pathaayo || 11 ||
Lakshmi Roop
Dharo Jag Maahin | Shree Naraayan Anga Samaahin || 12 ||
You also appear in the form of Goddess Saraswati and grant wisdom to the sages and thus ensure their welfare.
O, Mother Amba,
it was you who appeared in the form of Narasimha, sundering the pillar.
You saved
Prahlada and sent Hiranyakashyap to Heaven (as he was killed by your hands).
In the form of
Goddess Lakshmi, O Mother, you appear in this world and repose by the side of
Shree-Narayan.
Ksheersindhu Mein
Karat Vilaasaa | Dayasindhu Deejai Man Aasa || 13 ||
Hingalaaj Mein
Tumhin Bhavaani | Mahimaa Amit Na Jaat Bakhaani || 14 ||
Maatangi Aru
Dhoomaavati Maataa | Bhuvaneshwari Bagalaa Sukhadaataa || 15 ||
Shree Bhairav Taaraa
Jag Taarini | Chhinna Bhala Bhava Dukkha Nivaarani || 16 ||
Dwelling on the Sea of milk, O Goddess, with Lord Vishnu, please fulfill my desires.
O Bhavani, the
famous goddess of Hingalaja is no one else but you. Illimitable is your glory,
defying description.
You are yourself
Matangi and Dhoomavati Mata. It is you who appear as Bhuvaneshwari and
Bagalamukhi Devi to bestow happiness to all.
It is you who
redeems the world, appearing in the form of Shree Bhairavi, Taradevi, and Chhinnamasta Devi,
and ends its sorrows.
Kehari Vaahan Soh
Bhavaani | Laangur Veer Chalat Agavaani || 17 ||
Kar Mein Khappar
Khadag Viraajai | Jaako Dekh Kaal Dar Bhaaje || 18 ||
Sohai Astra Aur
Trishulaa | Jaate Uthata Shatru Hiya Shoola || 19 ||
Nagarkot Mein Tumhin
Viraajat | Tihun Lok Mein Dankaa Baajat || 20 ||
Reposing Gracefully
upon your vehicle of Lion. O Goddess Bhavani, you are welcomed by the brave
Lord Hanuman.
When you appear
in the form of Goddess Kali with a sword in one hand and a cupel in
the other, even time flees in panic.
Beholding you
well-armed, with a Trident in your hand, the enemy’s heart aches with
the sting of fear.
You also repose
in the form of the Devi at Nagarkot in Kangara. Thus, all three realms shudder
in the might of your glory.
Shumbha Nishumbha
Daanav Tum Maare | Raktabeeja Shankhan Samhaare || 21 ||
Mahishaasur Nripa
Ati Abhimaani | Jehi Agha Bhaar Mahi Akulaani || 22 ||
Roop Karaal Kaalikaa
Dhaara | Sen Sahit Tum Tihi Samhaaraa || 23 ||
Pari Gaadh Santan
Par Jab Jab | Bhayi Sahaaya Maatu Tum Tab Tab || 24 ||
You slayed the
demons like Shumbha and Nishumbha and massacred a thousand forms of the dreaded
demon Raktabeeja.
When the earth
was severely distressed bearing the load of the sins of the arrogant
Mahishasura.
You assumed the
dreadful form of Goddess Kalika and massacred him along with his army.
Thus, whenever
the noble saints were distressed, it is you, O Mother, who came to their
rescue.
Amarpuni Aru Baasava
Lokaa | Tab Mahirnaa Sab Rahein Ashokaa || 25 ||
Jwaalaa Mein Hai
Jyoti Tumhaari | Tumhen Sadaa Poojen Naranaari || 26 ||
Prem Bhakti Se Jo
Yash Gaavein | Dukh Daaridra Nikat Nahin Aave || 27 ||
Dhyaave Tumhein Jo
Nar Man Laayi | Janma-Maran Taako Chhut Jaayi || 28 ||
All the realms
including the Amarpuri (divine realm) remain sorrowless and happy by your
grace, O Goddess!
The flame that
burns at Shree Jwala ji is yours. All men and women ever worship you, O Mother!
He who sings your
glory with the devotion of love and sincerity remains beyond the reach of grief
and poverty.
He who meditates
upon your form with concentration goes beyond the cycle of births and deaths.
Jogi Sur Muni Kahat
Pukaari | Yog Na Ho Bin Shakti Tumhaari || 29 ||
Shankar Aachaaraj
Tap Keeno | Kaam Aru Krodha Jeeti Sab Leeno || 30 ||
Nishidin Dhyaan
Dharo Shankar Ko | Kaahu Kaal Nahin Sumiro Tum Ko || 31 ||
Shakti Roop Kaa
Maram Naa Paayo | Shakti Gayi Tab Man Pachhitaayo || 32 ||
All the yogis,
gods, and sages openly declare that without your favor, one can’t establish
communication with God.
Shankaracharya
had performed once a special penance called Acharaj, and by the virtue of which
he had subdued his anger and desires.
He ever
worshipped Lord Shankar and never for a moment concentrated his mind on you.
Since he did not
realize your immense glory, his all powers waned and the repented hitherto.
Sharanaagat Hui
Keerti Bakhaani | Jai Jai Jai Jagdamb Bhavaani || 33 ||
Bhayi Prasanna Aadi
Jagadambaa | Dayi Shakti Nahin Keen Vilambaa || 34 ||
Moko Maatu Kashta
Ati Ghero | Tum Bin Kaun Harai Dukh Mero || 35 ||
Aasha Trishnaa Nipat
Sataavein | Moha Madaadik Sab Binashavein || 36 ||
Then, he sought
refuge in you, chanted your glory, and hailed you, O Jagdamba Bhavani.
Then, O Primal
Goddesses Jagdamba, you were propitiated and in no time, you bestowed him with
his lost powers.
O Mother! Severe
afflictions distress me. Who other than you can remove my sorrows?
Hopes and
longings ever torture me. All sorts of passions and lust torment my heart ever.
Shatru Naash Keejai
Mahaaraani | Sumiroun ikachita Tumhein Bhavaani || 37 ||
Karo Kripa Hey Maatu
Dayaalaa | Riddhi-Siddhi Dai Karahu Nihaalaa || 38 ||
Jab Lagi Jiyoon
Dayaa Phal Paaoon | Tumharo Yash Main Sadaa Sunaaoon || 39 ||
Shri Durgaa
Chaalisaa Jo Koi Gaavai | Sab Sukh Bhog Parampad Pavai || 40 ||
Destroy my
enemies, O Great Queen, I remember you single-mindedly, O Bhavani.
O, merciful
Mother! Show me your favor and make me feel happy by bestowing me with all
sorts of riches and powers.
O Mother! May I
be the receptacle of your grace as long as I live, ever recounting the feats of
your glory to all.
Whoever sings
this Durga Chalisa, shall ever enjoy all sorts of pleasures and shall attain
the highest state in the end.
Devidaas Sharan Nij
Jaani | Kahu Kripa Jagdamba Bhavaani||
Deeming ‘Devidas’
to have sought your shelter, O Mother of the world, Bhavani, grant me your
favor!
